Effects of the War

The Vietnam War caused uproar for college student across the United States. Throughout this era, the student unrest soared greatly while protesting against the war in Vietnam. The demonstrations became so frequent and intense, until National Guardsmen had to be called in to settle the crowds of protesters that became deadly at times. Demonstrators were being fired on to by guardsmen who were of the same group as they were (McGraw-Hill, 2009).

The connection between student unrest and the Vietnam War involved the issue of military service. Once a male turned eighteen years, because of the war they were obligated to register for the military draft. This would able them to be eligible for two years to be drafted to a selective service if needed for the war. One of the ways of being excluded from this duty or perhaps postponing being drafted, was to enroll as a college student. This by no means excluded them from being drafted, but it gave them a chance to prolong the inevitable. When it was time for graduation, they had a choice of leaving the country to escape to Canada, or they could take their complain to Congress in Washington and protest to end the war. Many took the first option by pulling up stakes and moving to Canada to avoid the draft. Others stayed back and formed marches to protest against going to another country to die for something that that didn’t believe in. Many lives were lost due to the protesting, along with...
