In the guest lecture “Where Universitys Go Wrong” I believe that Victor Davis Hanson's main point was that even though attending universities has become a pathway that help people get on the career path they want, the educational system of universities have changed in a bad way. Hanson tries to prove that the university educational system have turned for the worst when he talks about the three reasons why the liberal arts department have changed for the worst. These three reasons are vocationalism, the therapeutic approach, and political correctness. First off vocationalism is when students take different types of vocational courses in their first 2 years of college before moving on to classes towards their major. And according to Hanson the problem with that is students do not acquire the skills needed for the career they want. The next reason is the therapeutic approach and to Hanson this is when Americans in the past became so successful that we rewrote the nature of man, man has changed and therefore we no longer need to study the past. Hanson believes this to be a reason why the liberal arts educational system to be going in the wrong direction because in today’s universities students are taking courses that they do not need and are too easy for them. The third and last reason why Hanson believes universities are going down the wrong path to educating students is political correctness. Political correctness is affecting the educational system because focusing on political correctness keeps students from learning and is hypocritical. And Hanson believes students should know more about the issues around the world.
In conclusion I agree with Hanson and his ideas. A strong reason I agree with Hanson is because being a pre nursing major I have to take GE classes and other classes needed to apply to the nursing program. I want to become a nurse and do not know why or benefit me in my career path. So why do I need to learn about history or how to be successful...
