Report This Essay

1. Introduction

This report will investigate if there is a correlation between height and weight of the general male population of Shanghai. The best way to find out is by measuring every single male in the Shanghai population. However that is impractical and also impossible. With statistics, taking a random sample of the population can represent the whole population.

The main difficulties of this report are finding a good sample size to represent the whole male population of Shanghai and also a method of collecting data in which it will not bias the result. The predetermined sample size that was given for this report is 32 individuals with an age range of 20-24 years of age. With the estimated population of 23 million in Shanghai, and approximately 50% of them are male, a sample size of 32 will not be an accurate sample of the entire male population (ChinaDaily, 2011). In addition, having an age range of 20-24 years old means that other age groups are excluded from this report thus making it a bias sample. Of course certain age groups should be excluded such as 0-18 years old as they are still increasing in weight and height. Sampling the general population of Shanghai means that not only do we include the local Chinese but also expatriates.

This report will go over the methodology of sampling used and how the collection of data was done. The data is then presented in the form of a table and a scatter plot. The mathematical sections will include the correlation coefficient, hypothesis test, regression line, and the confidence interval’s explanations and mathematics. The report will conclude with the result and if there are improvements that can be done in future sampling. By collecting continuous data of male height and weight, this report will show whether there is correlation in height and weight.

2. Sampling Method

The best technique for sampling the population is called the simple random sampling. In simple random sampling, each member that is in the...
