Modeling and Simulation in Systems Engineering
All human-made systems are conceived from a mere thought within the framework of a human mind. On its journey to fruition, there are many possible paths that those ideas may take. Throughout years of trial and error in the creation of human-made systems, the concept of Systems Engineering evolved. As defined by the International Council on systems engineering (INCOSE), “Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach and means to enable the realization of successful systems. It focuses on defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, documenting requirements, then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation while considering the complete problem, operation, cost & schedule, performance, training & support test, disposal and manufacturing” (Steinkellner, 2011, p. 11). Embedded in Systems Engineering is a method of analysis and evaluation by the use of models and simulation. The utilization of models and simulation in the design process has proved beneficial in the creation of human-made systems.
The application of models is found in both the realm of science and engineering. Although these two disciplines may use the same model types, their purposes of use are quite different. Fabrycky and Mize (2011) offer the following explanation of the use of models in the world of engineering:
Engineering uses models of the human-made world in an attempt to achieve what out ought to be. The validated models of science are used in engineering to establish bounds for engineering creations and to improve the products of such creations.
(p. 172).
The type of analysis and evaluation required in the design process will drive engineers to choose a model that best applies to their...
