Our global community is rich with information, opportunities, controversies, and complications. National boundaries are fast blurring as businesses of all sizes and types now travel the trade routes of the world. The growing power of global businesses affects all of us in our roles as citizens, consumers, and career-seekers.
Management and Globalization
This is the age of the global economy in which resource supplies, product markets, and business competition are worldwide rather than purely local or national in scope. It is also a time heavily influenced by the forces of globalization, the process of growing interdependence among the components in the global economy.
As businesses spread their reach around the world, large multinational businesses are increasingly adopting transnational or “global” identities, rather than being identified with a national home. The growing strength and penetration of these businesses worldwide are viewed by some as potential threats to national economics and to their local business systems, labor markets, and cultures. All this adds up to some uncertainty as executives move into new and uncharted competitive territories.
International Management
The term used to describe management in businesses and other organizations with interests in more than one country is international management. Its challenges and opportunities of working across borders – national and cultural – must be mastered, as leaders of companies press forward with global initiatives.
Someone who is informed about international developments, transnational in outlook, competent in working with people from different cultures, and always aware of regional developments in a changing world, is increasingly being sought. This new breed of manager is called the global manager.
