The Bible

In this lesson we learned the history of the Bible. We learned the origin and the development of the Bible. In lesson 1 it discussed The Bible-God’s Word Preserved Through the Ages.

This lesson talks about the origin of the Bible and the history behind it. The word Bible in the Greek word is “Biblia” which means “Book.” It is literally God’s written word in revelation of His will to man on earth. This Word of God is also called “word of life,” based on Philippians 2:16. The Bible contains the Old and New Testaments which Christians use. The Old Testament portion was writings before Christ and The New Testament portion was writings after Christ. Altogether the Bible contains sixty-six books that were written by forty authors, covering a period of approximately 1600 years. They were written in three different languages such as Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic. For The Old Testament, it was written in Hebrew and only a few passages written in Aramaic. The New Testament was written in Greek. All the writers came from various walks of life. Some were poets, philosophers, kings, princes, prophets, and statesmen. For example, David was King and Matthew was a tax collector.

There were three different continents that the Bible was written in. They were Asia, Africa, and Europe. The theme of the Bible is the salvation through Jesus Christ. The covenant God made with man about salvation before Christ came was the portion of The Old Testament. The agreement God made with man about his salvation after Christ came was the portion of The New Testament. The word “Testament” also means covenant or agreement. Basically The Old Testament commences what The New Testament completes. The Bible is not just a book about God, it reveals the nature of Him and His will for man.
