Discussion:

The main purpose of this investigation was to create precipitates, for them to be able to be used instead of becoming chemical waste, thus being useful for anyone working with said precipitates. Barium Chloride (BaCl2) was reacted with Sulfuric acid to create a precipitate Barium Sulfate (BaSO4). In this reaction, it was observed that Hydrogen (H) and Chloride (Cl) were spectator ions, as both remained unchanged before and after the chemical reaction. The precipitate that was created BaSO4 became a solid of a powdery white appearance. Zinc Nitrate (Zn(NO3)2 ) was reacted with Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), creating a precipitate Zinc Hydroxide( Zn(OH)2). This precipitate had a milky gel appearance to it. This reaction had spectator ions which were witnessed as being Sodium (Na) and Nitrate (NO3).When Aluminum Nitrate Al(NO3)3 was reacted with Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) it created Aluminum Hydroxide (Al(OH)3). The precipitate had a slight gel like appearance and was milky white in color. During this process Sodium and Nitrate acted as spectator ions, as they remained the same before and after the reaction. Sodium Chloride (NaCl) was created after reacting Sodium Hydroxide with Hydrogen Chloride (HCl). This reaction did not immediately become a precipitate as the others reactions, after being spun in a centrifuge. This product had to be evaporated for a result to appear as a white crystal looking solid. This experiment had no errors and every resulting product came out as predicted, by using the Solubility Rules for Ionic Compounds found in the lab manual (Appendix J).
