Critique: Week 1

This artwork is used on the cover of a novel called Birgit. Birgit is an extremely sad and powerful story about a girl whose sister is dying from brain cancer. It was drawn and written by an illustrator named Beatriz Martin Vidal. Vidal used different materials such as, pencil, white chalk and gouache to create this piece. I believe the intended audience are people who appreciate meaningful artworks and love to read heartbreaking novels. Line is the main elements used to create the mood. Vidal approach of using line was a technique by shading downwards because all the lines will directly and eventually point down giving it an illusion of a sad and delicate mood. The lines are more visible to the audience eyes, by looking closely at the drawing. In this piece blue is the only colour used, this help creates emphasis and display a powerful statement about the flowers to the audience. The statement behind the blue flowers represent a blindfold that blocks everything outside her own imagination. Value is an important element in this piece because it give the artwork an appearance where it will realistic by the usage of lightness and darkness. The little girl is place towards the bottom of the book cover this makes it asymmetry and the weight is unbalanced, because of the empty space above. I think Vidal created a very meaningful cover for her novel because it help expresses the mood in the story.
