Who Controls Birth Control

While some believe that teenage girls have a right to privacy and to make their own decisions about birth control, research proves that not only do teenagers lack the mentality to make such decisions about sex but parents involvement in decision making provides teenage girls with more options for birth control, allows parents the opportunity to provide reproductive health services for their children, properly educate their children on the pros and cons of certain birth controls along with a health care professional and educate their children about sex in general. "Absolutely no mother or father wants to even remotely fathom their teenage daughter may be sexually active. The harsh reality is that more teen girls are sexually active than the ones who are not and for that reason it simply must be addressed. “The issue is that some parents feel as if they engage in allowing their daughters to be placed on some form of birth control they are in some indirect manner giving the OK for their kids to have sex. This is may seem that way to the parents, but the kids will find a way to be active if they so desire to whether you help in the prevention of pregnancy or not." (Ezine Articles) Parents should be involved in the decision to distribute birth control to their teenage daughters. This starts with the parents educating their teenage daughters.

An article in the Morning Call talks about the need for teenage girls to be educated about sex. The article shows support for its claim by reviewing statistics that prove that most teenage girls are not educated about sex until after they have already had sex. The article shows that while 90% of teenage girls age 15 – 17 have received education about abstinence and birth control, 83% of them didn’t receive that education until after they were already sexually active.
