Green Gum

Many individuals find chewing gum enjoyable for an array of reasons; however, they have never considered environmental benefits until viewing an advertisement created by Wrigley. Their ad depicts a young woman chewing gum while reading a text that describes the benefits of using their environmentally friendly products. Through the use of attractive colors and repetitive phrasing, Wrigley makes a convincing argument that chewing their gum benefits both individuals and the environment.

Wrigley’s advertisement uses text to elaborately explain to the viewer the benefits of chewing their gum. The text begins by saying, “Chew beautiful, Chew green, Chew Wrigley” (Wrigley 2012). The bold font emphasizes these words causing it to capture the viewer’s attention. Reading these words gives the viewer the desire to chew the gum for several reasons. First, the repetition of the word “chew” causes the reader to picture themselves chewing the gum. This attracts the reader to the actual product while the words located at the bottom describe extra benefits of enjoying a piece of Wrigley’s gum. The viewer then reads the statement underneath the bold text to better understand Wrigley’s goals for the future. After reading this, the viewer continues to read the fine print underneath the image. The fine print explains how Wrigley wants to benefit the environment by reducing the amount of waste created, the carbon footprint left on the earth, as well as the amount of water used in the making of their products. The reader may wonder how Wrigley plans to do these things. The advertisement explains how Wrigley wants to educate the public on ways in which the company will benefit the environment as well as how individuals can partake in Wrigley’s mission.
