Suppose you are the analyst charged with developing a new system to help senior managers make better strategic decisions. What requirements-gathering techniques will you use? Describe in detail how you would apply the techniques.

If I were the acting analyst looking to develop a new system to assist senior managers for strategic systems, I think Interviews would be the most effective technique for gathering the nessecary requirements.

My main reason for this choice is respective to the differentiation in opinion that is likely to be apparent dependant upon the manager. Each will have a differing outlook on what they think is best suited for the new system. The impact of gathering this information is prevelant to the success of the produced system so the expenditure for the information gathering is less important – strategy is key to any business and the depth and breadth of the information to be low as there should not be too many options to optimise strategy.

I would ask the managers very probing questions, specialising in what they thought was good about the current system, what could inmprove on it and what was completely lacking in it. The users shold have a medium involvement as they do not have a lot of time but their opinion is obviously very important and so I would keep the interviews brief and to the point, but in my opintion they are the best way of gathering information as quickly as possible.

Although the Integration of Information is low – the only alternative for a higher integration is for JAD and I don’t believe the user involvement should be too high.
