EXERCISE 1.1 Characteristics of Helpful People

Think about someone who has helped you in the past—a friend, teacher, neighbor, minister, therapist. Make a list of some of the person's characteristics that you found particularly helpful. Compare your list with those of your colleagues. Of all the helpful characteristics on everyone's list, which ones do you find in yourself and which ones do you want to develop? In your journal, record specific ways in which you need to change to be a more helpful person. List specific steps you would need to take to make these changes.

The characteristics I have found in myself are empathy, kindness, honesty and being very reliable. The one I want to develop most for myself is the ability to have trust in others. To not be so judgmental of others. There are a few ways that I can change who I am to become a more helpful person. I need to learn how to be patient with others and be a better listener to those in need. The steps I have to take to learn patience is to first learn what makes me inpatient. I have to look for others needs, letting them ahead of me or letting their needs come first. It's not thinking so much about my needs and rights. It's being kind to others, being in self-control of yourself for everyone’s' benefit. "I" am not the center on the universe. "I" can wait. "I" can have others get or do something before me and not feel threatened or angry.

EXERCISE 1.2 By Any Other Name

Following is a list of terms used to describe the role of a clinical interviewer. Each may have different meanings or nuances for different people. Apply each term to yourself, and as you do so, notice any change in your feelings about or perception of yourself. Record these feelings in your journal. If you were a client, how would you feel seeing a professional with each of these labels?
