Dell's product design and decision-making go hand-in-hand where creating a quality product that is ahead of the competition reins. An example of applied decision-making with product design is when Dell recently focused on creating a company that is working towards becoming the greenest technology business in the world. Through a design competition, Dell strived towards creating a product that focuses on innovation but also on recycling and how the product can be created using this green design technology and natural resources, even without a clear path as to how to implement this green technology. "The computer concepts submitted not only explored multifaceted approaches to sustainability, but also, as Rajib Adhikary describes, became the nexus for a global conversation on green design and a source for many lessons on business and sustainability" (2008, p. 23). Dell leaders "recognized that we would need a framework of constraints in which to innovate, but consider that there is no exact formula or calculator for green design in the technology space" (Adhikary, 2008, p. 23). Dell started surveying its customers and created blog's that later moved into case studies and understandings of involving the community and the focus of implementing greener designs in the IT sector that other competitors would want to research and understand. Dell leader's knew and "recognized that we needed help from a broad audience to identify the scope of the challenge and create the knowledge base" needed that resulted in "ReGeneration, a global initiative aimed at people of all ages who care about sustaining the world's natural environment" (Adhikary, 2008, p. 23).
