Specific Purpose: At the end of my speech, my audience should understand the beneficial effects of caffeine, the negative effects and discuss what are considered safe levels of caffeine consumption.

Introduction

Attention Getter: (Bring in a cup of coffee, sip it) alright. How many of you here must drink coffee or tea every time you wake up? I wouldn’t be surprised if all you raised your hands; according to Betty Kovacs, MS, RD, 80% of the world’s population consumes caffeine on a daily basis and 20-30% of Americans consume more than what they should. Caffeine can be beneficial depending on how much you consume.

Relevance: Caffeine is widespread in our society these days and every few months we hear about how a study has shown that it is bad for us or good for us. What are we to believe?

Credibility: I have been a big consumer of caffeine in my life and I have consumed it for many reasons. A lot of times I just need the energy and at other times a can of coke really hits the spot. My parents are both addicted to caffeine and I am trying not to become as bad as they are about it. But not doing too good at it.

Thesis: The three areas I think you and all people need to know about the beneficial effects of caffeine, the negative effects and discuss what are considered safe levels of caffeine consumption.

Transition: Most people do not know that there are benefits of drinking caffeine.

Body

Caffeine is a psychoactive drug, meaning it can change moods and distort perceptions. This is not necessarily a bad thing. As soon as a tired person drinks caffeine, he or she immediately becomes sociable, energetic, happy, and focused. Other than personality changes, there are many healthy results.
