As a matter of fact, more and more people are beginning to believe that reading will influence their life in future. Reading of books is probably one of the most beneficial activities of man. Through reading, man is able to discover new ideas, concepts, places, and people. In this knowledgeable society, reading is crucial for everyone. Reading of books brings several benefits to every one’s life.

Enhancing vocabulary is one of the benefits of reading books. According to Langan (1989), reading book frequently is a best way to improve the reader vocabulary (as cited in Sernawati Siwasiwan). Reading of books can be a pleasurable and profitable investment of both time and effort in term of vocabulary building. Johnson O'Connor once wrote, “At least fifteen minutes a day of concentrated study on a regular basis can bring about a rapid improvement in your vocabulary skills.” Harste and Woodward (1989) shows that reading is developed through drawing, drama, writing by exploring and communicating (as cited in John T. Guthrie,William Schafer,Yuh Yin Wang,Peter Afflerbach,p.8). Reading, on average, can increase the ability to communicate through writing and conversion as well. Acquiring a large amount of sophisticated vocabulary can be beneficial in school, at work and socially. It will enable people to understand others’s ideas better and to have the satisfaction of getting other people thoughts and ideas across more effectively. However, learning 10 new words a day, learners would have learnt three thousand words in a year. Besides, learners might have established a life time habit of learning and self-improvement. In short, reading book can help people enhance their vocabulary.
