Learning Team Diversity Paper

Introduction:

It is critical in today’s economy and society that businesses pay close attention to diversity, both for those they employ and for those they seek to serve or profit from. Having a diverse workforce makes good business sense for large as well as small businesses. Properly managing a diverse workforce creates opportunities for businesses to grow utilizing the creativity, ideas, and contributions found in a diverse organization. There are many aspects to diversity; however, in this paper our team, The 155 Club, will address four main topics as they pertain to diversity: value and attitude differences, religion, gender, and sexual orientation.

Value and attitude differences:

Managing diversity in a workplace offers multiple challenges. It is more than simply acknowledging the differences between employees. Smart businesses recognize the value of these differences and utilize them. They must also monitor the attitudes of all employees, placing emphasis on inclusiveness and enforcing zero tolerance toward all forms of discrimination. Negative attitudes left unchecked can lead to problems with workplace relationships, productivity and morale, while positive acceptance of the value of employee differences can lead to fresh ideas, better processes and higher productivity.

Businesses must convey policies to their employees. Too often, however, they are just words on posters that are ignored by the workforce because they have no real substance. These values will never be anything more than worthless platitudes without effective and ongoing strategies for managing diversity. Due to this, it is critical that businesses must continually plan, implement and maintain policies which support diversity.
