Free write over Shaffner’s essay and my own annotations
I thought it was interesting when Shaffner talked about fan fiction saying “It’s not a competition: when a writer becomes popular, the response is the prize.” This is interesting to me because in all the fan fiction ideas we have been talking about, everyone on fan fiction is supportive and caring, it is not a competition. This makes me wonder, what does this tell us about competition in our society, is competition a good or bad thing, or neither? How might we use fan fiction as a community to resemble a healthy or unhealthy society (based on the competition aspect)? Is it truly NOT a competition or is there some type of underlying competition that is not spoken of?
When Shaffner said “the idea of sharing is nothing new. In fact, fan fiction functions a lot like folklore: it is a practice of shifting and filling the boundaries of a certain world to fit the person who is telling it, and of sharing those interpretations with others.” This whole sentence reminds me that for years and years, since the beginning of time that people have been “joining the conversation” even though it may not have been on paper, the computer or even on a stone tablet- joining the conversation is nothing new and can tell us something about our human nature and how we like to share our ideas with others. How might one describe the sensation when you get to tell a story to others? What makes sharing such a bonding experience? How might we keep the tradition going in means on telling stories to others?
