1. What role did business intelligence software play in catching an H1N1 outbreak in the northeastern United States? By using a database management system, EMA was able to track the statistics of how many patients were coming into hospitals with flu-like symptoms. They were are to apply statistical reports and graphs to visually see how the outbreak was moving throughout the Northeast and into surrounding areas.

2. How does a system such as EMA’s BI system use human intelligence and machine intelligence to support decision making? By combining machine information and output with human analysis and decision making, EMA was able to identify an increase in symptoms that related to the H1N1 virus.

1. How do the BI needs of business professionals and medical professionals differ? Business professionals are more likely to be concerned with forecasting and consumer trends to make knowledge decisions. Medical professionals can use information to make decisions on effective treatments. How are they alike? Both business and medical professionals need to be able to access data and information in a timely manner. They need to be able to make decisions based on the accumulated data.

2. How does this case study reflect the need for standardized digital medical records systems in the U.S.? As modern technology makes travel easier and faster, it becomes vital to be able to predict and contain outbreaks. How might such standards influence the country’s ability to keep its population healthy? The speed with which the medical professionals can track outbreaks can lead to faster production of vaccines and other medications.
