DBQ Essay

Throughout the 1930’s, many working class Americans suffered immensely during the great depression. The stock market crash and since the United Stated relied on declining industries lead to the fall of the economy. A huge amount of people lost jobs, everything in their personal saving accounts, and their homes, numerous of suffering citizens put the blame on President Hoover, and they looked to Roosevelt to save the troubled nation. The New Deals created by FDR worked to help the country become stable again, and for the most part helped the United States successfully come out of the depression. These deals worked to recover the economy, help the people with relief programs, and they worked to expand the federal government’s involvement with helping the Americans.

Economic recovery was very important to help end the depression, and help the many unemployed Americans have a paying job again. In the early 1930’s unemployment rates skyrocketed to around twenty percent of jobless Americans. By 1945 unemployment was back down to about 1.9%. FDR’s new deals helped to significantly reduce unemployment rates (Doc.3). In order to get the economy back on track, Americans needed to be working again so they would have money to spend and get money circulating in the economy again. Also, the banking system had to be improved greatly to avoid another bank disaster. President Roosevelt issued the “bank holiday” to sort out federal and state level banks and make sure they are financial sound to reopen and be a secure place to deposit money.

Relief programs created by FDR were extremely successful in helping the U.S come out of the Depression. Many public works projects were made to create jobs for the unemployed and helped them make money to support themselves and their families.
