The Effects of Video Games on Society The effects of video games on society is relevant but questionable as to weather it has a positive effect or negative one. Video games are a source of media just like television, books or music. There is an array of different types of games all within there own genre. Some of their genres are FPS (first person shooter), RPG (role playing game), MMORPG (mass multiplayer online role playing game), puzzle, adventure, strategy, and many are a combination between these genres. Video games have been around since the 50's, commercially since the mid 70's but they really broke out into the world in 1985 and they have been around since then (Kudler). This has caused communities in society to rise up for and against video games and conduct studies about the effects of video games. The types of communities that have come up for video games are forums, panels, websites, fan clubs and conventions. These conventions and panels happen all over the world. Some really big conventions for video games are E3 (electronic entertainment expo), Games Con, and Pax Prime ("Video Games"). At these conventions people can find out about new tech and games coming to the market a couple months or years later. This is also just great place for people to talk about video games that they like and technology they can't wait for. Just as it is a great place for meaningful conversation it is also a great place for unorganized debate ("Video Games"). Many groups have sprung up for particular games like Call of Duty, Halo and Battlefield. Not only have groups come up for specific games but also for specific brands like Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft. These groups argue and bicker as to what game is better, they compare the graphics of the games, the story of the games and the characters in the games, all to see which is
