Plasma vs. LCD TV’s – Much Ado About Nothing?

“1. In what ways are TV manufacturers practicing the total value concept? What features are consumers coming to expect in a modern TV?” (Babin & Harris, 2014, pg. 144).

Television manufacturers use the total value concept to understand why customers see the value in a product in multiple ways. Total value concept refers to “business practice wherein companies operate with the understanding that products provide value in multiple ways” (Babin & Harris, 2014, pg. 32). Not only do television manufacturers need to stay up to date with modern technology; but, they must strive to create newer technology for consumers to be interested in purchasing. “Today, people interested in purchasing a modern television are looking for a 4K Smart TV” (Kovach, 2012). Besides the traditional functions of a television sets, Smart TVs can provide online interactive media, web browsing, on-demand, and at home networking access. “4K TVs deliver four times as much detail as 1080p high-definition, which are eight million pixels compared to two million pixels” (Kovach, 2012). Therefore, television manufacturers are going to have to use the total value concept to create a television that can be useful in multiple ways for their customers.

“2. Say you manage the electronics department at your local Best Buy. Would you tweak the TV settings so each TV displays an ideal picture or would you leave them as they are out of the box? How would your decision influence returns and customer satisfaction?” (Babin & Harris, 2014, pg. 144).

Retail stores, such as Best Buy, purposely tune settings on the display models. They want the television to look as bright and clear as possible, to get a customer’s attention. The television setting vivid mode increases the brightness level, color, contrast, and backlight. Tweaking the picture mode to vivid can have an influence in buyer attraction.
