Real World Radical Formulas
Now a rational exponent is an exponent the the form is a portion. Many expression that contain square root of number can be a radical expression. Even through both can have real world problems? Radical expression can be any expression or equation contains the square root. With the square root sign particular the number that are inside is a radical. But the number inside the square root is called a radicand. That also a variable number that can also be a radical expression
This assignment is to solve problem 103 on page 605 (Dugopolski, 2012). It is stated that the Capsize screening value C should be less than 2 if a boat is to be considered safe for ocean sailing. The formula is given as C = 4d 1/3 b where d is the displacement in pounds and b is the beam width in feet. The exponent of -1/3 means that the cube root of d will be taken and then the reciprocal of that number will be used in the multiplication.
Problem number 103 on page 605 is regarding a Tartan 4100 sail boat. It states that the capsize screening value should be less than two to be considered safe for sailing in the ocean. The formula given is C=4d-1/3b. C is the screening value, d is the displacement in pounds and b is the beam width in feet. The exponent of -1/3 means that the cube root of d will be taken and then the reciprocal of that number will be used in the multiplication. This will be shown in the steps below.
a) C = 4d-1/3b Values are plugged into the given radical formula.
C = 4(23,245)-1/3(13.5) Here you applied exponent first are the values plugged into the
C = 4(.140) (13.5) 2 multiplications
C = .56(13.5) simplify
C = 7.56 the capsize value is less than 2.
