The General Nutrition centers Inc. (GNC) was founded by David Shakarian in 1935. In a span of five years after incorporation, the company had opened a multiple of stores in the United States of America. Mr. Shakarian continued running the company until his death in 1984. In current day, GNC is among the leading retailer of wellness and health products. Its brand is emerging to be the most respected globally. The product sold by GNC includes: minerals, vitamins, herbal supplements, and diet and sports nutrition. It has operational segments like retail, wholesale and franchise. These segments specialize in three core businesses for the company. These are: purchase of raw materials, developing the products and selling of processed goods.

The retail section contributes to about seventy three percent of total sales. The sales are generated from online sales through GNC.com, company’s own stores and the newly acquired subsidiary, LuckyVitamin.com. The company had tremendously grown to twenty six quarters dealing with retail by 2010.

The franchise takes only sixteen percentages of total sales. The revenues come from royalties on franchise sales and fees. By 2011, GNC had about nine hundred and twenty four domestic franchise serving over five hundred franchisees. The company had more than one thousand five hundred and ninety franchise in its fifty three countries of operation.

The manufacturing unit contributes to eleven percent of the total sales revenue. These revenues are generated through producing products to third parties. GNC further enhances manufacturing unit by leveraging its facilities for business to companies like Bayer, Bausch & Lomb and Pfizer.
