Response to Sexual Assault

Sexual assault has to be one of the biggest issues our Army faces in this day and age. The Army and other institutions in the United States are having a hard time dealing with sexual related issues. Sexual Assault is defined as an intentional sexual contact characterized by use of force, threats, intimidation, or abuse of authority or when the victim does not or cannot consent. Being a DOD employee we have numerous training every month of the year about this type of behavior to help deal with it, but it does not seem to be working. Wright (2013), “In FY12, the Military Services implemented a variety of prevention training and education programs for Service members: The Army continued Phase III (Achieving Cultural Change) of the “I. A.M. Strong” campaign, which focused on fostering an environment free of sexual assault and harassment. The Army revised and fielded new Sexual Harassment/AssaultResponse and Prevention (SHARP) training in several of the Army’s professional military education curricula for enlisted soldiers and officers.”

I have dealt with a restricted and unrestricted reporting of sexual assault. Obviously the restricted I have no knowledge of the situation, but I did lose a very good soldier due to her being transferred to another post over the situation. I also had to escort the soldier who committed the offense to his court martial with a fellow NCO. The soldier that reported unrestricted should have never been assaulted. She was hurt by a fellow soldier being assigned to temporary duty to fill a slot for a training exercise my unit was hosting. The unit that sent the soldier over already had a case being brought up against the soldier for sexually assaulting another soldier in their unit. My soldier was giving him a ride home when she was assaulted. She called me and I called my platoon sergeant and first sergeant. When we talked to the...
