Kïlauea Iki Trail:

(4-5 hours; 4 miles, Elevation 3,874ft above sea level) We have just checked into our hotel and it is a beautiful day so we have decided to take a hike into the once-molten lake of lava in the Kilauea Iki Crater. That last lava flow was on Nonvember 14, 1959 and last for 5 weeks. The main vent where lava erupted has now left a cinder cone called Pu’u Pua’i. In the rocks surrounding the trail you will notice the glassy grean crystal make up of mineral olivine. When you walk closer to the vent you will notice an array of colors in the rock, this is caused by the volcanic gasses oxidizing iron-rich minerals in the lave creating shades of red, purple, and brown rocks.

Mauna Ulu:

(2.5 miles; 3.5-4 hours; )After taking a hike yesterday around the Kilauea Trail we have decided today to take a hike through the rift zone that was created in five-years of eruptions called Mauna Ulu. Mauna Ulu first erupted on May 24, 1969 and during the eruptions roads, cultural sites, and coastal grasslands were buried by the lava flows. During these eruptions airborne lava fragments solidified, we know as tephra, and was named from its different shapes and sizes such as Pele’s tears and Pele’s hair.. As we see when we are walking that each crater overflowed with each eruption from Mauna Ulu adding layers and elevation to the terrain.
