Introduction

There has been much focus over the past decade about television programs and their influence and frequent consumption by the teenage population. Many professionals in the field of Psychology as well as media analysts and concerned members of the public, locally and internationally have raised many arguments concerning the threats that television programming poses to society. Many professionals have even gone as far as conducting research projects and even laboratory tests to link crimes to the violence and aggression that is portrayed via television broadcasts. This seems to be a cause of major concern to individuals and governments internationally because of the upsurge in criminal activities related to acts of violence, abuse and even gang related violence that can be viewed on numerous television programs.

The role of the media, especially that of television broadcasts have not only been seen as a contributor to the rampant activities of criminals, it has also become an advocate of “modern popular culture”. This directly affects the local culture of various nations by uprooting local culture and replacing it with a new form of culture that is portrayed on television programs.

Therefore the role that television has assumed in today’s society has become a major issue that plagues teen magazines, talk shows and even news broadcasts in Trinidad and Tobago. The rise in the crime level locally has even been said by many to be a mere reflection of what is seen on television programs. The effects of these changes in our local society are so profound now that they can be felt and observed even within distant communities such as La-Brea. Therefore this research is set at finding out the extent to which television programs influence teenagers in the community of La-Brea as well as the impact of such influences.
