Preparing for Academic Success

Undergraduate students are usually at the learning stages of writing, this indicates writing is led by an instructor or teacher and the student is guided to the acceptable level of writing required in higher learning.

According to the American Psychological Association 6th edition, (2014), "Only references that have been cited in the paper are listed on the reference page. Personal communications are cited in the text but do not appear on the reference page because the reader cannot retrieve them."

Writing it is a process of writing ideas, theories, and any arguments in a concise clear manner. This is also expected to be completed in order with compliance to APA guidelines. Research must be done on the topic; therefore the student must research for specific sources of information for and against a particular theory or idea. This will allow the writer to be well informed on the topic, and have the ability to communicate to the audience with relevant proof or legitimate resources to collaborate the theory.

In academic writing, critical thinking is one of the key elements. According to the Center for Writing Excellence, (2014) the elements include analyzing, interpreting, synthesis, and evaluation. The important step within this process is the evaluation process.

Evaluation is deciding the quality and significance of what you have discovered

by synthesis. Applying your own experiences, observations, and attitudes will help

you to determine the value of ideas. The better you become at critical thinking, the

more capable you will be at evaluating words and ideas. (Center for Writing Excellence,

2014).

My personal writing skills are adequate; however, my shortfalls in writing skills are within spelling and grammar. The strengths I have in writing is the ability to format my paper properly also to organize the flow of my information. While writing, it is important to...
