Answer each question in 50 to 150 words. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?

Diversity is defined as: the condition or quality of being diverse different, varied, difference, and unlikeness (Oxford English Dictionary). It has also been defined as the “condition of being different.” Google defines.

Diversity is valued by recognizing the differences between people and acknowledges these differences. It is what members of a communities can do to also acknowledge their differences, but celebrate their similarities. They can build strong and rich relationships among the diverse memberships.

2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?

Ethnocentrism is a person that perceives their culture, traits, and identities as normal and will correct other cultures and traits as abnormal and inferior. Ethnocentrism is detrimental to society because, such generalizations -- often made without a conscious awareness can be way off base and cause us to misjudge other peoples. Ethnocentrism can lead to cultural misinterpretation and it often distorts communication between human beings. This can best be described as making statements, like: “We are better at driving then Asian Americans, they don’t see as well and cannot maneuver a vehicle through traffic.

3. Define emigration and immigration.

The definition of emigration and immigration can sometimes be confusing because of the similarity. Emigration is the act of leaving your home country to reside in another. Immigration is the act of coming to live in a foreign country. To the people in your original home country you are an emigrant. To the people in the foreign country you move to, you are an immigrant.
