POLLUTION IN CITIES.

TYPES AND CAUSES.

Air Pollution- This may be defined as the contamination of the atmosphere in such a way that it disrupts and disturbs the natural and chemical composition of the air. It can be in the form of-

1) Particulate matter such as dirt, dust, soot and smoke or any fine particle suspended in a liquid or gas.

2) Harmful gases such as carbon monoxide which are released from vehicles.

3) Sulfur Oxides with great emphasis placed on sulfur dioxide. These are released from various industrial processes and volcanos. Further oxidation of Sulfur dioxide forms acid rain.

4) Volatile Organic compounds they branch into two categories Methane and Non-Methane. Both gases are greenhouse gases play a significant role in global warming.

WATER POLLUTION- This occurs when a body of water is negatively affected by the introduction of foreign materials which increases its toxicity levels to the point where it is damaging to human health. Causes of water pollution-

1) Excess sediment erosion.

2) Improper waste disposal this includes waste from industrial plants and factories.

NOISE POLLUTION- This is an undesirable level of noise caused by human activity that disrupts the quality and standard of living. Causes of noise pollution-

1) Vehicles (traffic etc.)

2) Airports.

3) Construction or demolition.

4) Parties and Music festivals.

THERMAL POLLUTION- This is the abrupt increase or decrease of a body of water by human influence. Causes of Thermal pollution-

1) Suspended particulates that trap heat.

2) Power plants.

3) Deforestation.

SOLUTIONS-

1) Reduce the carbon emissions expelled from vehicles by implementing exercises such as Carpooling and the use of public transportation.

2) Educate the general public in the dangers of pollution within the city and prevention methods.
