‘Who’s next...Is it YOU? You OWE a duty to your country!’ ‘Come along boys! Enlist today!’ ‘I’m doing my duty are you?’ Damn...It was surrounded by those everywhere; ‘’my country needs me!’’ Bryan cried, as he ascended from his sleep drastically. Bryan knew he had to join the army, as he had little choice. His emotions felt scattered; a million thoughts rushed through his mind as he felt debilitated and no use to his country; he had witnessed many of his friends enlisting to join the army in the last couple of days, which left him questioning his decision of where he stands if he does or does not join the army. Bryan was apprehending if he did serve the country it would be a great accomplishment and praise to him as he would fulfil his granddads wish of him serving his nation and being a hero to his town. However knowing that he had to leave his loved ones behind was killing him; he couldn’t imagine his life without his family because Bryan had never been away from his family and girlfriend neither had he been out of town without them. It was complicated for Bryan as he was attempting to satisfy everyone as he did not know himself on what he wanted because he was dragged by the propaganda that was surrounding him all along.

Bryan gradually put his head against the wall as he knew he was constantly fighting a battle within himself as his heart felt something else and his brain told him something completely different. It was complicated; it felt like he was arguing to myself, fighting for a decision that he could make that would please everyone including himself.

All takes place the morning he is meant to sign up. He’s led in bed thinking about all the things people have said, walk in his grandad’s footsteps, what will his mates think? What will his girlfriend think? What will people at work say?

They’ll be proud – his family will be heatbroken though

He’ll be a hero – but Granddad was never the same person

It’s the right thing to do – but he doesn’t even...
