The One Child Policy In China

What is the ‘One Child Policy’:

The one child policy is a policy that was introduced to China in 1979 because the population in China was rapidly rising and didn’t show any signs of reducing. Although this has been put in place in the towns and cities, in the rural areas where people are not so well educated, they rely on their kids to take care of them in their old age so they tend to have more kids so they won’t be alone in their old age. They have now changed to policy so in rural areas families with one daughter are allowed to try again for a son.

Why was it introduced?:

The policy was introduced because they had to tackle the uneven distribution of population. Since the communists cmae to power, people have been forced to migrate from the densely populated east of the country to the sparsely populated west. But, the distribution is still uneven. Another problem was population growth. In 1949this was not seen as a problem. The new communist government believed that China could achieve military and economic strength through numbers.

What have been the results of it?:

The results of the policy have been very effective but many people dislike the policy’s rules and the way they have to plan a family under the guidelines of the policy. People are worried that when they get to other generations there wont be enough people to work and do the jobs that they have in china. They are also worried about how they are going to be cared for in their old age, they wont be getting that good of a pension if the country carries on like this. Also the way they have to plan a family is that they have to consult people on when they want to have a family, also if they accidently get pregnant without it being planned before they are expected to have an abortion.
