Canada Safeway

Safeway originated in American Falls, Idaho, under the name of Skaggs Grocer. A young man by the name M.B. Skaggs, purchased this sole proprietorship business from his father in 1915. M.B.’s, ingenious business strategy provided immense success and within a few years, he opened up 428 Staggs stores in 10 states. In 1926 after more than doubling the size of his business, he merged with Safeway stores and incorporated as Safeway, Inc. Safeway went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 1928.

Today, there are now over 1,300 Safeway stores across the US, which include 266 in Northern California and Hawaii, 273 in Southern California and Nevada, 107 in Texas and 28 in Alaska. Safeway prides themselves on their commitment to the communities in which they serve.

The “Heart of Safeway” was created to raise awareness and take ownership over all Safeway's Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.
