The Caribbean consist of 13 islands, geographically are islands washed by the Caribbean Sea. Exploitation is the action or fact of treating someone unfairly in order to benefit from their work. Throughout the Caribbean the labour systems known as slavery and indentureship had play a major part in the Caribbean. Thus the purpose of this essay is to examine two labour systems which are slavery and indentureship.

Firstly, indentureship had major impact on the Caribbean society. During the indentureship period, Indians, Chinese and Madeirans came to the Caribbean as an effort to save the sugar industry and were called indentured servants. The indentureship started in the nineteenth century, this system was in ways similar slavery, for example the indenture servants were poor, landless people, working on the plantation with fake promises and small plots of land after they had worked for few years.. The indenture servants agreed to enter into a contract to work in the Caribbean for a period of 5 to 7 years for minimum wages. As mentioned earlier the indenture servants were the Indians, Chinese and Madeirans. The largest group of indentured servants were the Indians. Most of the Indians who left their motherland had no idea where they were going but they were promise a better life in the Caribbean but they were tricked. Like the slaves had harsh living conditions for example they had to worked 12 hours a day whether it was raining, scorching hot or they were sick, also the Indians lived in barrack type buildings, 100 feet long and divided into 10 feet long sections where there was an extra 6 feet added on to the width to put a kitchen area, it was also said that one family was crammed into this small room. Another reason why indentureship was an exploitation of labour is was because had just been abolished. Planters were still mentality adjusting to the fact that slavery had end and so they mistreated the Indians.
