I. Introduction

In the course of the last decades a steady increase of road traffic has been noticeable. In fact, this trend is not meant to stop in the near future. Thus the rapid and vast growth of traffic becomes increasingly precarious for the participants thereof. The World Health Organization forecasts that road traffic casualties will be ranked within the top 5 of causes of death by 2030. Many of these casualties are due to carelessness of drivers in certain situations, as lane change maneuvers or not keeping safety distance. Thus Driver Assistance Systems could put a stop to this devastating prediction, by assisting the driver from monotonous tasks, compensate drivers carelessness or even intervene to prevent the worst.

Since the late 90's of the last century the importance and also the penetration of these systems have rapidly increased. Terms as ABS, ESP … are very familiar, yet their rapid market penetration was driven to reduce the total number of casualties. From 2000 to 2010 the total number of deaths from road traffic casualties went from 8000 in 2000 to 3000 in 2010.

Self-evidently the decrease of deaths cannot fully be granted to Driver Assistance Systems, yet having played an tremendous impact.

Therefore the trend of ADAS is far from over, the automobile industry continues their injection of capital and thus introduces a new era of assisted driving. The current trend is driven and executed by modern communication and data processing technology, which effectively enables the car with adequate situational awareness.
