Part I: Origins of Psychology

Within psychology, there are several perspectives used to describe, predict, and explain human behavior. The seven major perspectives in modern psychology are psychoanalytic, behaviorist, humanist, cognitive, neuroscientific/biopsychological, evolutionary, and sociocultural. Describe the perspectives, using two to three sentences each. Select one major figure associated with one of the perspectives and describe his or her work in two to three sentences. Freud developed psychoanalytic and it is investigating and treating personality disorders through looking at unconscious drives, motives, conflicts, and childhood experiences. This theory includes the idea that things that happen to people during their childhood can affect them later in life.

Behaviorist is focused on observable behavior, this behavior must be objectively and scientificly measured.

Humanist perspective is focused on human behavior. The free will and human nature are an emphases of this perspective.

Cognitive perspective is focused on our thoughts and interpretations. How do they affect how we respond to certain situations.

Neuroscientific/biopsychological perspective is focused on viewed behavior through genetics and the biological process in the brain and other parts of the nervous system.

Evolutionary perspective is an approach that focues on natural science, adaptation and evolution of behavior and mental processes. It wants to explain why we love certain people want to hurt others.

Sociocultural perspective is looking at social interactions and the cultural determinants of behavior and meantal processes. It explains how our values and beliefs transmit from our cultural environments affect our psychological processes.
