THINK PIECE ON PAUL KEEN DOUGLAS'S TANTI AT THE OVAL BY KEIRAN OUTAR

Paul Keen Douglas was born in Trinidad and Tobago but spent his early childhood years in Grenada where his family lived. He is a self- published author whom was active in drama from an early age and has a wide background in theatre and creative arts. After his return to Trinidad he focused on highlighting the entire Eastern Caribbean's language showing the world the islands everyday’s way of speaking and their slangs. This particular audio by Mr. Douglas was about a family member known as Tanti Merle whom he was asked to take to a cricket match at the oval for her birthday and the antics that took place and the comments that were thrown at him in the Trinidadian's home speech / slang. The thesis statement for this essay is the dialect and lifestyle of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago along with the citizens of the combined islands team. The way the author talked about Tanti Merle whom he regretted taking to the cricket match and the way she acted will also be looked at.

In the thesis statement I mentioned about the dialect used. Firstly it was in the first person manner and not proper dialect. This way of speaking is a norm in Trinidad and Tobago. Yes I agree it is not the correct way to speak but as a child growing up, you are taught from your parents and teachers the proper way to speak but as a person gets older they tend to associate themselves in different groups. Each individual is different so they tend to fall into groups with people of their similar interest. Within these groups the youths and younger children pick up on certain words adults say as a substitute for another word or a shortened version of a sentence or a saying. He started saying '' look doh ask me no stupid questions you see where I sit down here I vex vex vex''. This clearly states that he was upset and he went on to say why.
