What cultural factors must U.S. sports franchises overcome to increase popularity abroad? Why? Being a huge fan of football the sports franchise that I’ll be using to answer this question is football. The cultural factors that the National Football League would have to overcome to increase in popularity in other countries are their system of knowledge, values, attitudes, behaviors, language and communication. Football is currently only popular in the United States. Although, Europe does have the Euro Football League but unfortunately its popularity does not match that of America’s NFL. Soccer seems to have overcome most cultural factors because it is the most popular sport around the world with an estimated 3.5 billion fans while American football has an estimated 400 million [http://www.topendsports.com/world/lists/popular-sport/fans.htm]. The big issue the NFL faces abroad is that America calls our sport football and other countries like Asia, Africa, Europe, and Mexico call soccer football. These other cultures around the world have their traditions when it comes to soccer just as US fans have traditions when it comes to football. Most people overseas are set in their ways so the NFL would need to have a better understanding of the people in other countries way of life, their system of knowledge, and how they communicate. The most important is that the NFL would need to have a better understanding of their attitudes, behaviors, and values so they could market their sport in that area. Because Americans are so sexually open the marketing techniques that draw fans in, in America would not necessarily draw fans in, in a more conservative country where it is not only frowned upon for women to show their skin and hair but it is also against their religion.
