STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Young people spend a great deal of time focusing on relationships than on their school work. They tend to disagree that this is what leads to the decline on their academic performance. Compared to long ago, more and more teens are getting physically and emotionally attached to the opposite sex. A study is being conducted at Waterloo Secondary School, comprising of 800 students. Since it is co-educational with adolescent students aged 11-19, the “problem” of boy-girl relationships arise.

It is during these adolescent years that they start to develop romantic relationships, however, due to inexperience, they are often short lived. In order to feel a sense of belonging, many students enter into cliques or social groups. Members of cliques often become subjected to peer pressure which in turn can lead to depression. At times they may go to certain extremes just to fit in. Some may even engage themselves in sexual relations which in turn can lead to negative consequences, causing students to sometimes even drop out of school.

This is not a new problem where teens are experiencing relationships because this same problem was encountered long ago. However, today, young people tend to place more emphasis and take things to a greater extent than before. Therefore, this study will seek to investigate the extents to which boy girl relations impact performance in school.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The major goal of this research is to help young people focus less on having intimate relationships and rather placing more emphasis on school work. By helping to alleviate this problem, the following questions will be investigated:

* Why are teens interested in being in a relationship?

* Does being in a relationship mean that you have to be intimate?

* Are teens often subjected to peer pressure as a way of fitting in society?
