Paper Towels and Their Absorbency

A. Problem statement/Testable question:

Do Bounty paper towels really absorb more liquid than other top brands?

This scientific experiment is to determine if the leading brand Bounty is in fact the top absorbing brand. By performing this experiment it will help determine if not only are companies being truthful, but will also help determine how to minimize our waste. By using a paper towel that absorbs more, while using less is crucial to our environment. I will purchase 3 brands of paper towels to conduct this experiment.

A1 Literature Review:

According to a study on which paper towel absorb water most by Bashaer Alkhafaji (2013). “Bounty paper towels did not absorb more volume of water, then other brands of paper towels in a time frame of one minute.” However, another researcher by the name of Shelby Davis (2013) found that, “The more expensive brand of paper towel did not matter when it came to absorption.” There are many different experiments out their regarding the brand and its capability of withholding the liquid that is wiping up. Both experiments were testing to determine what the name brands say are in fact true.

A2 Experimental Design:

The researcher will take the three selected brands of paper towels; Viva, Bounty, and Kroger. Each brand will then contribute one piece or towel from the roll. The researcher will then locate a bowl that can hold approximately 3 cups of water. The researcher will then fill the bowl with plain room temperature water. Once the water has been added to the bowl the researcher will make sure the surface is dry. If the surface is in fact dry the researcher will take a 1/4th measuring cup and fill with the water from the bowl. The researcher will then dump the liquid from the measuring cup onto the pan. Once the liquid has been placed the researcher will then take one of the paper towel sheets and place it on top of the liquid. The researcher will then start the timer and determine...
