My think piece is written on the story about “Tanti at de Oval” by Paul Keens-Douglas. Paul is a Trinidadian-born playwright, writer and performer whose voice is definitely recognized in the Caribbean. He has been a writer for more than thirty years and this story of “Tanti at de Oval” is one of many that prove his remarkable writing skills. This audio story is about Tim Tim telling his wife what happened when he carried Tanti Merle to the Queens Park Oval to watch a cricket match between Trinidad and the Combined Islands. The use of dialect, repetition, colourful illustrations, amazing humor and intense expressions just to name a few, were some of the techniques used what made this story so captivating. Not to mention the vivid imagery that was painted in my head when Tim Tim thoroughly described every scenario making me feel like I was there at the cricket match. The story was very relatable as majority of individuals live with or often socialize with older folks on a daily basis and the characteristics which Tanti Merle possessed are similar to most old people. In my opinion this story was very well written more so than flawed. However, there were still a few aspects that stood out to me that I have chosen to voice my opinion on.

Firstly, the use of dialect allows a writer to perfectly portray the way in which the people of the Caribbean really speak. Therefore it would captivate more people as it would be easily understood by anyone as opposed to using proper language and big words making it difficult for certain people to understand. In my opinion it also makes it relatable as somehow it makes you feel as though you can literally hear the voices of the people in the story. I am in total agreement with the use of dialect for these purposes but at the same time there is sometimes also a flaw to these techniques. Instances where people from foreign may want to listen to this story written by Paul Keens-Douglas it might be a struggle for them to understand it...
