It is no secret that for centuries the public has been aware that smoking has been and will continue to be a danger to the health of many. Just about every single one of us has been affected in one way or another by the affect that smoking or smoke inhalation can have on someone. Whether you’ve lost a loved one to lung cancer, cared for a sick child with asthma or perhaps you’re a smoker yourself and are now dealing with the consequences. Although governments and smoking prevention groups have discouraged and even regulated smoking in one way or another, the threat continues to surface. Public smoking-bans will undoubtedly reduce smoke-related health problems amongst non-smokers, such as lung cancer, heart disease and asthma attacks. Smoking doesn’t only affect the health of smokers, but also the health of innocent bystanders.

When you gather with your family to have dinner at a restaurant, you ask to be seated in the “non-smoking” section; do you really eat comfortably and safe from the inhalation of smoke by sitting a few feet away from 10 to 15 people smoking? It is impossible not to be affected by the smoke in one way of another. According to an article in London’s Evening Standard, “Night out as a passive smoker; non-smokers inhale the equivalent of one cigarette in an evening at the pub”, the author tested the affect of second-hand smoke on three non-smokers. The results were undoubtedly disturbing. An increase of 10 ng/ml (ng = nanograms) is equivalent to smoking one cigarette. Within an approximation of about 3 hours of exposure to second-hand smoking, the 1st person had an increase of 6.2 ng/ml; the 2nd person experienced an increase of 8.8 ng/ml and the 3rd person and increase of 5.2 ng/ml.
