The Wrath of a Warrior

In Iliad, book 1, Homer demonstrates how rage can transform the greatest warriors. Even the brilliant Achilles a seemingly loyal warrior, can get consumed with vengeance and bloodlust. His frustration is murderous, doomed,(1.2) complete madness, like a disease whose condition only gets worse, and no one really cares for; until its an issue. By then its too late, madness has turned Achilles self centered,caring for no one but himself, which cost the Achaeans countless losses(1.2) Achilles actions may sound extreme to the average reader, like those of a child when angry.Why does he feel like murder is the answer? This paper will analyze the power and risks of Achilles rage, in iliad, and portray how rage drives Achilles to become a madman.

Achilles rage boosts to the point, that it causes rivalry against his allies. Its fully demonstrated, after Agamemnon wants to strip Achilles of his war prize; Briseis. Achilles feels disrespected by the Achaeans and begins to insult, Agamemnon "Shameless, armored in shameless-always shrewd with greed!" How could any Argive soldier obey your orders(1.175) , His rage causes him to disrespect his comrades, because next he starts dishonoring Menelaus "you dog face, you" what do you care! Nothing, you don't look right or left(1.189). Why is Achilles trying to start problems with two powerful leaders, at the same time?Why didn't Menelaus defend himself? Achilles is trying to provoke one of the

kings to battle him, but Menelaus is being the bigger man because he knows that Achilles rage isn't

something to be messed with. However, Agamemnon starts demanding Achilles to give up Briseis or

he’ll personally be at his tents to snatch her. Complete madness takes over Achilles, suddenly his debating with his conscience should he thrust through the ranks and kill Agamemnon now? or check his rage and beat his fury down?(1.229) Rage drives Achilles to the point where he feels like murder is the...
