Persuasive Speech: Texting While Driving

* Intro: Who here has a phone? Who here uses text messaging? Well today I want to talk about a serious issue that concerns everyone in this class room. While I’m sure you’ve seen the commercials and have had many people tell you that texting while driving is dangerous, but many cannot relate to the issue as well as I can.

* Example: Last year, my brother was driving into town down in South Carolina where he goes to school. On a one lane road, a women had been texting while driving while she was coming down the road the other way. She swerved across the line in the middle of the road and was coming head on to my brother. Fortunatley, he had been paying attention to the road and made a sharp right turn to avoid. At the last second, when she looked up, she saw what she was headed for, jammed on the breaks, but it was to late. She hit the side of my brothers car…Fortunatley they were both okay; however it goes that this could have gone much worse

* Evidence: Studies show the texting while driving is more dangerous than drinking and driving. Think about that for a second. While texting, you are paying absolutely no attention to the road. Even looking away for a mere 3 to 4 seconds could yield a fatal accident.

* 11 teens die per day + 23x more likely to be in an accident

* On top of how dangerous it is, it is also illegal. You can be charged for reckless driving and I know no one wants to deal with that.

* Final: Everyday, people, teens especially, die due to texting while driving. Not only are you endangering yourself, but you are also a threat to everyone else on or near the road. So I ask you guys, being my colleagues and my friends, put down your phones. No text is worth it, and if it really is, then just pull over.
