AFM 461 -- Taxation II

Course Introduction

These comments are being posted, because the first week of classes in 4B is devoted to WATcase. We will not have time in the first class on September 20 to make extensive introductory comments.

The Course Outline as a Contract

The first thing that we would like you to do, in advance of September 20, is to read the course outline very carefully. This document is posted on this UWACE website under the "Resources" tab and represents our contract with you. Your enrolment in the course signifies your acceptance of this contract.

The Instructors

When you read the course outline, the first thing that you will notice is that there are two instructors for all three sections of this course. Stan Laiken has been a full-time faculty member at the University of Waterloo for many years. Christy MacDonald has recently completed her Ph.D. in Taxation at the School of Accounting and Finance. Prior to entering that program, she was a tax manager and she taught at the university level for a year. She also taught this course last year. Christy has also assisted us in the revision of the 31st edition of the textbook, which we will be using this term.

The way we divide our course load responsibility for this course is for both to teach the classes for all three sections on any given class day. That way all students will get the same instruction during that class day. You will, also, have an opportunity to get two perspectives or ways of thinking about some topics.

Evaluation

The evaluation dates and weights are indicated on the first page of the outline. The dates shown are fixed and will not be changed. In fairness to all students in the course, there will be no deferrals. Missing the midterm will result in a grade of zero for the midterm, unless your absence is certified by an appropriate person and we can verify the reason for your absence with that person.
