Assume you have collected data on sales associates of a large retail organization in a major metropolitan area. You analyze the data by type of work classification, education level, and whether the workers were raised in a rural or urban setting. The results are shown here. How would you interpret them?

An interpretation can be made that individuals that were raised in an urban setting tend to leave the company more than individuals with a rural upbringing. This could simply be because the people with a rural upbringing are less familiar with the area, so it takes them longer to find work elsewhere. Nevertheless, this chart indicates that salaried employees (8) have a lower turnover than hourly workers (16). There is also evidence that persons from rural origins have fewer turnovers than persons from urban backgrounds, but only in salaried positions. When education level is included, we see that there is higher turnover among employees with a low education than among employees with a high education. Education seems to be several times stronger than the rural/urban origin. In fact, wage earners the rural/urban difference becomes confused and is probably immaterial. When rural/urban origin is "held constant" it appears that education is perhaps twice as important as job type, and even more so among those of urban origin.
While looking at this data, it can be concluded that in general the employees with hourly wages are more likely to leave their job than those who is bringing home a salaried income. The results show that the employees’ education level will also have an impact on the likely hood of turnover.
