I chose to write my paper on registered nurses because I am currently in my first year of nursing school at Bryant & Stratton. After graduation I hope to obtain a position as a registered nurse in a hospital.

Nurses have numerous job responsibilities and tasks depending on where they work. The U.S. Bureau of Labor describes a few of the major responsibilities, “Registered nurses (RNs) provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members” (Bureau of Labor Statistics [BLS], 2012, What Registered Nurses Do section. para. 1). The U.S. Bureau of Labor also lists various job tasks that registered nurses perform such as, “setting up plans for patients’ care or contributing to existing plan, recording patients’ medical histories and symptoms, and teach patients and their families how to manage illnesses or injuries” (BLS, 2012, Duties section, para. 1). There are many other job tasks that nurses perform and the tasks vary depending on where they are employed.

The growth rate of registered nurses is expected to be very favorable. “Employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 19 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations” (BLS, 2012, Job Outlook Section, para. 1). The average salary for registered nurses is promising. “The median annual wage for registered nurses was $65,470 in May 2012. The median wage is the wage at which half of the worker in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $45,040 and the top 10 percent earned more than $94,720” (BLS, 2012, Pay section, para. 1). Nursing is a very fast growing field with a good salary.
