My two year goal is to obtain a registered nursing degree. There were several reasons I decided to pursue a career in nursing. The most important reasons I choose nursing were my love for caring for people, the median income for nurses, the need for nurse and job outlook in the nursing field, and also the potential for advancement in the nursing field.

Registered nurses have major responsibilities and perform many job task. “Registered nurses (RNs) provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about the various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members” (Bureau of Labor Statistics [BLS], 2012, Summary section, para. 1). Nurses are very hands on with patients and their families. Performing tasks at a professional and skilled level are apart of nursing. “Registered nurses typically do the following: record patients’ medical histories and symptoms, observe patients and record observations and consult with doctors and other healthcare professionals” (BLS, 2012, What registered nurses do section, para. 2). Duties performed by nurses help to ensure the wellbeing of patients is top priority.

Making a decent wage in a career guaranteed to be around for decades helped me to be confident in my choice to go back to school for nursing. “The median annual wage for registered nurses was $65,470 in May 2012” (BLS, 2012, Pay section, para. 1). The capability of making this wage or more would be very beneficial to my family and I. “Employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 19 percent from 2012-2022, faster than the average for all occupations” (BLS, 2012, Job outlook section, para. 2). These statistics are an indication that the need for registered nurses will increase at a rate higher than the average job.
