ii) Family stereotyping and expectations
Stereotype: Male should not dye their hair, piercing, make up because it makes us look gay.
One shall never tattoo as it brings bad impression and there’s an old saying “Your body, skin and hair are
from your parents, respect that.”
People who don’t treat old folks well, they are not a good person.
Expectations: As long as we are good people, we don’t do anything bad, parents will be happy.
Don’t mind what kind of job we do, as long as we happy and bring no trouble to the family.
Fulfill our responsibilities. For example, if you are a student, be responsible to your study.
iii) Family lifestyle, values, beliefs and interpersonal relationship behavior
Family lifestyle : Give a lot of freedom but at the same time moderate control in terms of personal behavior.
Values : There is no free food in the world; Work as hard to earn a living; Believe in education can bring changes; Everything has to do on our own; will not mind even if working at a low level area as long as we don’t cheat, steal, lie.
Beliefs : Do not talk while eating and sleeping; do not play with the chopsticks or yell “im hungry” before having meal; When food is served, the elders will have to take first, then only youngsters; do not mention death or 4 for many times as the number of 4 sounds like “die” in Cantonese; Pray before going out and after coming back home;
