Abstract

The development of a lesson plan is essential for a successful educational program. According to McGrew, Shore (1991) teenage pregnancy is one of the most difficult issues for teenagers, their families, and the community. The educational program developed in this paper will cover postpartum care, including educational needs and rationales, as well as student learning objectives (SLO). Also included will be learner outcomes, content outline, evaluation methods, instructional materials, methods, and resources.

Curriculum Development

Although the rate of pregnancy in the United States has been declining, it remains the highest in the developed world. According to the Guttmacher Institute, (2014), 13% of teens have vaginal intercourse by the age of 15 and each year almost 750,000 women aged 15-19 become pregnant. The Guttmacher Institute (2014) also provides us with the information that in 2006, 59% of the teen pregnancies resulted in live births, while 27% resulted in abortion. These statistics indicate a need for increased education in regards to teen pregnancy and the lasting and life changing effects that it has on the teen, family, and community. After analyzing these statistics it becomes apparent that although the learning needs of this group are great, there may not be a readiness or sense of urgency to obtain this education.

Goals and Learner Outcomes

According to DeYoung (2009), the first step in the educational process is to assess the readiness for learning. If the audience is not ready to learn the session or sessions can be short and offered as a series. The learning process may take longer to accomplish, but the information will be beneficial for the learners (DeYoung, 2009).
