Question 1

As the demand for competitive and skilled employees increase, the case study illustrates that it is becoming extremely difficult for tech companies such as Google and IBM to spot them. There is a high demand for employees who will help companies to become more profitable through their innovation, efficiency and productivity. The case explains that companies have shifted from the traditional ‘resumes’ when hiring and recruiting employees to a wider and broader approach. Due to the apparent lack of ‘right’ or perfect candidates to fill in positions of tech companies, IBM, HP and Google have started recruiting young talents in colleges and high schools. This is through their respective programs aimed at attracting highly skilled and talented skills.

Question 2

According to the case study, "search for the purple squirrel” in the context of spotting talents implies that there is an extremely low supply of the right or perfect candidates. In this analogy, right candidate who can perfectly suit in new positions rarely exist. As such, companies seeking to look out for such candidates are misguided. It is the same for other business particular non-tech companies who also struggle to find the right candidates for their jobs. Baker (2014) states that high skilled workforce is the backbone of any company.

Question 3

As the HR of a tech start up company, it is imperative to ensure that the company attracts, maintains and retains highly skilled workers. In order to spot them, I would design programs and puzzles and select some of the best candidates. As indicated in the case study, Facebook used the recruitment strategy efficiently and incurred marginal costs. However, it is critical to start programs designed to provide students at college level in order to attract more talent within the company (Baker, 2014).
